One of the reasons that people can misunderstand are that words can have 2 or more meanings. This is once of the reasons that the English language is full and puns and ultimately humor. Here is a collection that was sent to me. Remember to share the laugher, its good for your health.

Those who jump off a bridge in Paris are in Seine.

A backward poet writes inverse.

A man's home is his castle, in a manor of speaking.

A hangover is the wrath of grapes.

Does the name Pavlov ring a bell?

Reframing

Misunderstandings in communication happen all the time.
Many times it comes from believing that we know what the other person is going to say or that we know what they mean without listening to them.

This can stem from our own biaes and experiences in life.
To overcome this, when we are communicating with another person, it can be important to reframe our thoughts, feelings and opinions of what we believe is going on.

Reframing is basicly looking at the situation with a new set of eyes. It’s asking your self if you have a clear picture of the situation and of what is happening around you.

For example: You could ask yourself, "Is this person really angry at me or are they hurting and scared? Do I have all of the facts?"

Do I really want to hand my power over to them by reacting?
Its asking: How do I want to be in this situation.

Next time you are not sure if you have all the facts, try to reframe and then clairfy with the person you are talking with. The results can be amazing.

Starting out with Clear Communication

The best way to open up the lines of communication, is to do your best to ensure that the other person has a clear idea of what you are saying. Too often we can be vague or give partial information and get annoyed when others don't understand us.

This is so fundamental that many communication masters, such as Marshall
Rosenberg, teach the following.

Giving specifics.

For example.
When you do… (Promise to get me the sales record by 4 pm and then don't),
I feel … (Frustrated)
Because I… (Need to get the report out before the end of the day)
And I need to know that…. (I can rely on you.)

When people understand what you need and why, they are much more likely to correct the situation or work with you on solutions.
However, if you were to say something like, "You are useless and unreliable". The person may not know exactly what you are talking about and why. Also, they will be put on the defensive and often will be unwilling to resolve the situation.

We can't assume that the other person will automatically know what we are talking about, and life has shown that most often they don't.

Try this out for the next week and see how this works for you.
Remember it can be the little things and going that extra distance that can over come many communication challenges.

New Words & Meanings

In past issues, I have talked about words that the Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary has added to their list and words that are looked up more than others are. This gives us insight into how our language and communication is growing. Many of the additions come from new discoveries and ways of living.

It is essential to have change in our language in order to have growth and continual use. It has been shown in the past that languages that do not evolve with the times, fade out and run the risk if extinction.

Below is a small sample of nearly 100 words and slang’s that have become part of the "normal" language and are being added to the:
Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, Eleventh Edition

See which ones you are already using. I have added a few definitions to the list.

Technology and Computers

Mouse potato
The computer equivalent of a couch potato:
Someone who spends a great deal of leisure time in front of the computer.
Both activities tend to be accompanied by snacking. A recent survey by the American Snack Food Association found that 85% of Web surfers snack at the computer. It has been observed that this habitual nibbling and relative inactivity can lead to development of a characteristic potato-like body form

Spyware

Science and Medicine

Avian influenza

Biodiesel
Refers to a diesel-equivalent, processed fuel derived from biological sources.

Gastric bypass
Surgery that makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size. This leads to weight loss.

Pop Culture

Soul patch
A small growth of beard under a man's lower lip

Supersize

Entertainment and Leisure

Labelmate
A singer or musician who records for the same company as another

Ollie
A maneuver in skateboarding in which the skater kicks the tail of the board down while jumping in order to make the board pop into the air

A person given to often excessively emotional performances or reactions

Suppressed Message

As I have pointed out in several past issues, there are many reasons why people have communication breakdowns. Looking at the various reasons helps in our understanding as well as assists us in improved connections with other people. This in turn enables us to get our message across more effectively.

Whether intentional or not, one of these areas is the suppressed message.

Quite often, we focus most on the information that is important to us and we leave out the rest. This can give a very lop sided view of the events or situation. I find that some teens are a master of this, though there are some politicians who are probably are a close second.

A teen may tell you that they want to spend the night at a friends house. They tell you that his or her parents are there and that they will be safe.
The suppressed message is that the parents don’t know that you are staying overnight and that they are going out themselves. The teen may have also left out that others were also invited to this gathering.

Another example would be a teen asking if they can go to the movies. You are concerned about them hanging out with a certain person and you ask, "You're not going with John, are you?" The teen smiles and say not, not to worry that she is going with Sally, while all along she knows that John will be there.

Some adults have used this device and kids watch what their parents do. For example, if you ever phoned into work and said, "I can’t come into work today as I woke up feeling very sick.", and you knew it was because you partied the night before, you are using suppressed message. As well, you are teaching those watching you.

You are asking, isn't there ever a time for a suppressed message and I would say yes. However it depends upon your motives for doing so.

Ask yourself, is it to deceive or is it to protect?

If a colleague or friend asks you what you think about their outfit, painting, project etc and you really don’t like it, being polite can better than insulting them. And yes there is a time for critiquing, but many people are not trained in how to do it properly and just end up hurting the other person. Just because we don't like something doesn't mean that a lot of other people won't like it either. Everyone has different tastes and opinions.

When you are trying to find out information from another person. Ask yourself, "Am I getting the full story here?" "What other questions might I ask that could help me get the bigger picture?"

As well, when you are trying to get someone to understand you. Ask yourself, "What might have I left out?" "What else should they know?" Am I keeping something back?"

Leaving things out could lead the person to a hasty conclusion. But that is another issue for another week.

What's Your Body Telling Others?

Last time I spoke about open-ended questions. How they can help, you get others to open up to you more. However, that is a part of the whole picture. There are many reasons that people will close up to you. One of the reasons is that you can be sending them messages that you don’t really want to talk to them by your body language.

It has been proven that people pay more attention to your body language than they do the words you are saying. If you say that you are happy, but your arms are crossed and your head is down, people will not believe you. If you state that you are fine, but you are grimacing, those around you won’t believe you. If you say that you want to talk, but you are tense and your body is pointing away from the other person, they will believe that you don’t really want to talk to them.

When people are listening to you, what they believe is divided into the following:

7% your words,
38% your tone and
55% your body language.

So the next time you talk to someone, stop and look into a mirror or ask someone, how you are being portrayed.

Do others give you quick short answers?

People have said, "Maria, I try to get (John or Jane) to talk to me, but all I get are short or quick answers. There seems to be no substance to the conversations."

Now this is more common with talking to teenagers, something I have experienced myself. However, it can also happen with employees or even co-workers.

It can be very frustrating when you are trying to find out certain information you need to get a job completed, or even trying to build up a better working relationship.

Fortunately, there are ways to help you along. One of them is to look at the type of questions that you are asking. For example, a closed-ended question more often will bring you a short reply.

If you ask, "Have you got the outline for the project?" You many receive a quick "Yes" as a reply even though you were wanting the details.

Asking open-ended questions will lead you to more information in your conversations.

Instead of asking,
"Have you been working on the project?"
which could also get a Yes. Try asking.
"Tell me about what you have accomplished on the project".

Instead of,
"Did you like the project",
try,
"What about the project did you think was good."

There are many more examples that we could go over. The first part is to ask yourself. How have I been approaching people.
Try out this way of approaching people and take note of the answers that you receive.

Speaking in Absolutes

When we start to pay attention to how we talk to another person,
we may find that we use the words always or never.

For example, if we say things like:

Women always get emotional
Men never understand women.
People of ____ race (fill in blank), never work hard.
Employees always waste time in meetings.

This almost certainly brings out the defenses in the other person.
It brings in generalizations and hurts those who definitely don't fit those categorizations.

In essence, you are saying that your thought or opinion is absolutely correct and there is no room for argument.
Others can then feel threatened or angry at your statements.
There own beliefs and attitude are now put on the line for debate and scrutiny.

They may feel attacked by your statement and stop listening to anything that you may say.
Which ultimately stops communication.

Using words like some or sometimes keeps the doors of communication open. It enables you to have a discussion about your thoughts and solutions to be worked out. Moreover, that's when success comes in.

Also, the above examples are negative which also can close down communication, but that's another article.

What Are Your Intentions

When engaged in communication with another person, we must be aware of our intentions, with the message that we want to get across.

Do we want to inform, coercion, manipulate, inspire, persuade, or control?

It is important to know and realize what we are trying to do to be affective. Sometimes people are not aware of what there intentions are. They believe that they are trying to persuade, when in fact what they are doing is manipulating and forcing control over the other person. When we do that, we all lose out in the end. People will be cautious about interacting with you in the future, which leads to communication breakdown.

Do you ever stop to think about what your intensions are before speaking?
What do you believe that your predominate style is and why?
Have you ever felt that someone was trying to coerce or manipulate you into agreeing? And how did that make you feel?

I first wish to thank everyone who wrote to me with their prayers and well wishes for a speedy recovery. I appreciate your caring words and am grateful for so many of you.

At time when I came close to death, I could have chosen different paths and ways of dealing with it. However, as a person who understands the importance of intrapersonal communication, meta and quantum physics, I knew what I said to myself would affect my recovery.

When I was told that I was lucky to be alive, I could have chosen to be in shock or in gratitude that I survived. When I was told that the doctors didn’t know why it happened, I could have been afraid of it happening again or know that it wasn’t my time and I still had much to share and do in my life.

Yes, I told myself that this was just a temporary set back, a chance to look at my life and see where I was heading and what I have already accomplished. It gave me the chance to evaluate as to whether I was on track or had left out any aspects that are important to me.

I was aware that I had become very busy and this gave me the opportunity to rest, reflect and contemplate.

Was I:

I on track
I taking enough time for fun or meditation
I accomplishing the things that really mattered to me.
I taking time to be with my family
Keeping my life in balance

Did I notice that my health was down?
I asked myself, "When was the last time I walked around the lake or took a swim at the pool?"

Success is only success if it happens in multiple areas of your life.
And asking yourself these important questions can let you know whether you are experience the life you desire or a life you’ve locked yourself into a life you hate or worse putting your health or life on the line.

As I continue on my recovery, I realize that I have been opened up to a new and higher understanding and appreciation of life and all the wonderful opportunities before me.

The key is the honest communication you give to your self with no excuses or regrets. Just honest evaluation with a plan and a map to that desired plan you long for.

I wish you all the best and I look forward to continuing assisting you with your communication training and more.

It's based on how we are often told that we can't change our nature or anyone else's for that matter.
Yet, quantum & meta physics and now even biology has shown that this just isn't true.
What we can change is based more on our perception in life, on what we believe we can do and what we submerse ourselve in.

Advancements in science and in how we think and function are catching up with people like Napoleon Hill or Maxwell Maltz of whom, told us that the way we think and feel, and that which we focus on will shape our world and the outcome of our lives.

So the first step to transforming your life, your business into the success and fullfillment that you desire, is to open your mind to the possibilities that you can change. That is a crucial first step.
For if you say no or I can't, than you brain will literally filter away opportunities right before you. Many people self-sabotogue and miss out on the help and gifts that could excell them forward, because they won't accept that they can change.

This week practice opening your mind to the possibilities that all things are possible.

So first decide, what it is you want to do, be and have. Then once you have a clear picture, start to be around those types of people, places and events. And know that you can change your life and alter the reality that you feel you have. If you want to be a marketer, chef, athlete, writer or entrepreneur, start getting to know some. Find out what they do and get into a mastermind group. Submerse yourself around those skills and traits you wish to take on. And yes, that means leaving some people behind. Especially those who want you to remain the same.

The More We Think We Know

Ok Valentines Day is approaching and I am getting more and more requests for communication skills with family, spouses and significant others. So this seemed like a great time for Communication with family and close friends.

One of the biggest breakdowns of communication here is that the more we get to know someone, the more we think we know them. You may have to re-read that 2 or 3 times.

In a newsletter, I can only touch on the subject, however, if you discover the possibilities that we don’t really know the other person, it can open you up to a world of discovery and improved relations that you didn’t know that you could even have.

Quite often, we start to believe we know what the other person is going to say or what they mean so we literately shut them out or over talk them. Your response to whatever they may start saying could be "yeah, yeah", or "I know", when in fact you may not know at all. To truly know what the other person is thinking or feeling at all times and forever, would mean that the other person has remained stagnate and had no growth what so ever in their lives and that they are the exact same person that you originally met.

Now this is not possible for in nature, we are either growing or dieing.
Life is continually teaching, changing and growing us in ways that we cannot predict or necessarily understand in another person. In so many ways, they (and we) are not the person that we (or they) originally met.

Even on a biological level, science shows that the cells of our bodies are constantly renewing and over a period of time, every cell is replaced. As well, on an intellectual and emotional level, we are continuing to learn, experience, discover and understand our world around us. This leads us to new thoughts and ways of looking at the world around us.
I have watched couples in workshop, that when they took the time to truly listen to the other person and discover what they felt and desired, the words, "I never knew" repeatedly came out of the other person. This heartfelt experience changed their relationships and their lives.

You can discover for your self, by putting aside for one evening, everything you think you know and open yourself to the possibilities of new discoveries in your significant other and in yourself.

Merriam-Webster's Words of the Year

Well they are out. The 2005 most looked up words for the year.
I found this year’s list to be interesting. You can get a glimpse of how people are thinking and feeling by the words.
Yes, some people looked them up just to know how to spell them, but others looked them up to better understand their meaning. And there is an excellent chance that those looking up how to spell them, where using them in sentences.

I noticed that in the last couple of years people were looking up words like:
democracy, electoral, incumbent, sovereignty, hurricanes and quarantine.
You can see how much of the words reflect the events and concerns of governments and the people.
As blogs entered the online world of journaling, people rushed in to create their own, so not surprisingly, blog top the charts in 2004.

I am also not surprised to see tsunami & pandemic on the list of 2005.
What I found interesting was or pleasantly surprise was to see that the top word for 2005 is integrity.
Now, as I said it doesn't give the reasons for people looking up the word, but it does give us some insight. Whether people are looking for more integrity in their own lives or want to use it in their business or even write about it. It gives hope for increase values and understanding in others.

It also fits in with a change I have seen in the business word. More and more people are working on co-opetition instead of competition. By working together, they have discovered that they can accomplish so much more and they are able to help someone else out at the same time. They have stated that their worlds have opened to possibilities and successes that they wouldn't have accomplished with their old mindset. They have also had less stress and made new friends.
It is definitely in alignment with the saying as you give so shall you receive.

It is by people who believe in this that have helped me grow and taught me so much more than I could have achieved on my own. For them I am grateful.
For 2006, it would be great to see words like, understanding, gratitude, patience, wonder, and non-judgment top the charts. Together we can take steps to just that.
As always you can choose how you are going to look at and act or react to any situation.

"One Cannot Not Communicate"

Most of you reading this are fortunate to have a hire education. No doubt you have already benefited from your formal schooling.

However, with the sum of knowledge doubling every 3-4 years, with entire industries emerging and fading within 10 to 20 years, a good formal education just isn’t enough.

Paul Zane Pilzer, a leading economist, believes that in the next few years, adult education will become the number one industry in America. It is incumbent upon us to be on a life-long quest for knowledge.

What we know and what we know how to do are critical to our success.

When I went to high school, we were told that we would likely have three to four careers in our lifetime. My parent’s generation expected only one. My children will possibly have six to ten.

Jobs for which we’re preparing young adults will, in many cases, not exist by the end of the decade. Most of the jobs available in 10-15 years don’t even exist now. Over 90% of the jobs in the US weren’t in existence when most of us were born.

I don’t believe that many of us want to be one of the people on the news stating that they didn’t realize their job would end.

So what should we study? What do we need to know? What skill will be important for our future? I believe that knowing how to learn better, knowing where to access information will be most important.

Learning skills, speed-reading, edutainment and multi-sensory input will all play an important role in our ability to stay up with rapidly changing technologies.

As much as our jobs, businesses and careers will change, principles will not. The way we do things may change but Universal laws remain the same. The skills of success, which we teach, will always be useful and never go out of favor.

Good communication and relationship skills will always be in big demand. The ability to embrace change and adapt to change will have great value.

Learning how to use the Internet effectively, how to maximize our productivity with communication tools will be essential. Use of computers, their applications and distance learning will also be important.

Customized information will be key. Being able to pick the kind of news, frequency and level of detail we want to receive will focus the specialized knowledge we need.

Take time to think about what your skills, talents and passions are. Notice what trends are developing and where your skills, talents and passions can tie in with this.

Invest in Yourself. Most progressive companies that are staying with or ahead of changing trends have a set percentage that they invest into ongoing education. It's recommended that you put aside (5%) or whatever you can start with, to continue investing into your future.

Sadly, many businesses that state they cannot invest in education or changes eventually fall way of the dinosaurs, vinyl records and other distant memory items and trends. Then their businesses collapse and close. In addition, with them end the jobs of the staff.

Once you’re clear on what you want, your success will depend largely part on how well you learn what you need and how well you apply that knowledge.

It’s up to you. Don't allow yourself to be at the mercy of changing trends or people that you work for. It's your future. Embrace and invest in you.

Stock Market Humour

A man stated to me that our gift is our curse and our curse is our gift.
At first I had to really think on this to understand it fully. It has such profound truth. Which I will going to in a future issue.

It made me think about how it relates to our languages as well. That which messes us up in our understanding of one another, also can give us a laugh or a smile.

Thankfully, I have friends who continue to send me the puns, metaphors and humour that shows how words can have several meanings.

These are based on the stock market.

Helium was up, feathers were down.
Paper was stationary.
Fluorescent tubing was dimmed in light trading.
Knives were up sharply.
Cows steered into a bull market.
Pencils lost a few points.
Hiking equipment was trailing.
Elevators rose, while escalators continued their slow decline.
Weights were up in heavy trading.
Light switches were off.
Mining equipment hit rock bottom.
Diapers remain unchanged.
Shipping lines stayed at an even keel.
The market for raisins dried up.
Soda Pop fizzled.
Caterpillar stock inched up a bit.
Sun peaked at midday.
Balloon prices were inflated.
Scott Tissue touched a new bottom.

Remember to stay open to the possibility that what we thought we heard, isn’t necessarily what the other person meant. So much more can be accomplished as well as improved relationships and business goals success.

Breaking Through the Barriers

You've tried everything, you've listen to the experts, in frustration you shout out, "Why can't I seem to figure this out?"

This can be stated for many areas in life, whether you are working on health, finances, business, improved communication skills or relationships. Quite often when we start out on the path to change, we hit stumbling blocks and set backs.

We've made promises to ourselves that this time it will be different, and start thinking, I just need will power. Then you start to feel the strain as you try to force your way through.

Sadly, if it was just willpower that was needed then many more would succeed. Willpower is more like an elastic band, the more you force and stretch it, the tighter it gets, until it snaps back or breaks.

Most causes of failure and relapse have more to do with habits and belief systems, many of which you are not even consciously aware of. Science has shown that we have 6 areas of the brain, 5 of which are in your subconscious. So if your subconscious brain doesn't want to change, 5/6th's is much stronger than 1/6th.

This is why, so many of the experts tell you that to succeed you need to work on getting rid of your barriers, your self-sabotage due to outdated beliefs and habits. There are different ways that are recommended.

Often people will need more than one. You are changing a lifetime of negative and destructive beliefs. Don't let these barriers and old belief's stop you. Treat yourself to a better tomorrow and discover the possibilities within and before your.

The Gift Only You Can Give

This time of year, many people are deciding on what gift to give that special someone. Whether it is a spouse, child, girlfriend boyfriend or just someone who’s been there for you, it can be hard to decide.

Of all the gifts that I have given over the years, two have stood out for people.

Why they make a difference in your life
Why they make a difference in other peoples lives
The talents and gifts that they have
What you appreciate about them and why.

The second gift is the gift of listening. Often we half listen, because we have several things on our mind or believe we know what they are going to say. And people know it. I have heard many people say, "If only someone would just listen to me."
They desire a friendly ear, a sounding board to just hear them.

Find a time when you are not rushed
Make sure there are no distractions
- Turn off the TV, radio, cell phone etc.
- Make sure you are not too tired to listen
Face the other person
Show signs that you are listening
Do not give advice unless asked for
Stop the temptation to respond, jot down a note is necessary

You can be amazed at what you can learn by just listening. I have seen people go through this process and say things like, "I never knew". And all it took was taking time to listen. It is also very rewarding watching how happy this can make the other person.

So often we are rushed in life and don't take the time to let others know that they matter to us. It is important, especially at this time of year, to communicate with others how we feel. Sadly, many people are better at pointing out the negative or what is wrong and some people start to think that is the only thing you see in them. Then they go into depression or worse, because they belief that no one cares.

These two gifts can go along way in developing improved communication and stronger relationships.

Knowing What's Important To You

At this time of year, many people start to get so rushed that they start blocking out more and more of what is around them. Often this can be for sanity reason. There can be an abundance of information coming at you with the latest sales, health issues, time concerns and list of things to do etc.

Yet, when we do this, we also block out what is important and what we need to know.
Things that will help us move forward and improve our lives. Even when rushed, we need to take the time to make sure that we are still communicating our needs and request are as well as those of our loved ones and colleagues.

One way to help you at this time of year is to write up a list of your intentions and priorities.

Ask yourself:

What do I need to accomplish this month
What do I need to know or find out that will help me
- Move forward in my life
- Help my business grow
- Become healthier
- Improve or develop skills needed for the new year

When you have a list, it helps your brain know what to put on your important list.
It then develops its own filtering system to enable you to noticed what you need and filter out the rest. This saves your nerves and your time. As well as, helps you enjoy the holiday season on a much happier and grateful level.

Did I Answer Your Question?

Todays question deals with the 3rd.

You are the expert at communication so perhaps you could explain to me why it is only women who tell another woman she looks tired?

Why do woman say this to other woman? I don't believe it is out of concern. For that matter why does anyone feel the need to tell me how I look. Don't they know I know how I look. I also get you look sad, you look mad, you look stressed, you look lost, you look great ok, that is what the men say.......

I have other lady friends and associates who tell me they get the " you look tired" thrown in their face all the time just like I do. could you please explain this and possibly pass it on to all your leads that telling a woman she looks tired is NOT a compliment and makes about as much sense as asking, "Are you pregnant?"

Hi Barbara,

There can be several reasons why people do something and I would have to see an example to give a more accurate reason. However, there are some basic reasons.

Most often people will reflect on to another person, how they are feeling at the moment. Therefore, there is a good chance, their remark is what they are feeling. (Tired, mad, stressed, lost, etc.)
Most psychologist and metaphysicians state that you cannot see in another, what you don’t already hold in yourself.

Another reason, is that a surprisingly large number of people feel insecure about themselves and or their abilities. It seems to help them to notice what isn’t right about the other person so that they can feel better about themselves.

Some people are just looking for a distraction and if you start talking about your situation, it gets their mind on something else.

Of course there is also the negative people out there who always seem to be looking for what is wrong in any situation or other people, and they generally believe they find it, even if it isn’t there.

For many of these people, if you smile and say, "Really, well pull up a chair and give me a hand", you will find that they vanish in a hurry and are careful not to mention it again.

Why more women, one reason is that if it is a non-conscious attack, (or even consciously for some) more women do it on a more passive-aggressive level. It is easier for them to then say, "I was only wanting to know if you were ok." Or some similar remark.
And of course a "Sorry for caring" remark just to get that last jab in.

However, I have noticed that there are more kind and caring people in the world than the negative. It helps to focus more on the positive people and stay away from the others. Some people do really care and like to help others.

What I Learned From My Trip

I have seen people go on trips and then complain about what they didn't get, yet saw others including myself through communication acheive what we wanted.

For example:
When we arrived at the Caymen Islands, it was raining that day, it was still warm though.
When we went ashore, we were told that most of the tours had been canceled due to the rain. Several people moaned and went back to the ship, some went into the town and shopped.
However, the group I was with, we asked if we could create a new tour, we didn't mind the rain and we aquired rain ponchos.
The guide said sure, as long as we were willing. I had a great time.
We went to a place called Hell, Conche House, A Rum Factory, A Turtle Farm and more. Check out some of what we would have missed if we hadn't spoken up and communicated our desires.

Returning to the Ship

There is also communicating with yourself and I did that at Jamacia
I always wanted to ride a horse and one of the tours was horseback riding in the ocean and through the country. I told myself to go for it.
I had a great time. Sunburnt but a great time.

I also met and got to know some wonderful people and others that I met before, I was able to get to know them even better, through talking with them. When you know how to communicate it removes the fear of approaching people and you build lasting friendships with them.

Last week was an exciting adventure for me.
I got to know some wonderful people on the cruise
and made friends with some very influential people.
It is amazing what you can accomplish when you know how to communicate.
You get to realize just how many wonderful people are out there.
I will go into more details as soon as I catch up on my sleep.

What Everybody Should Know... About The History & Development Of Communication

Have you ever stop to realize just how important communication is to you.

Without being able to connect with other people, it will not only stop you from achieving your goals and desires, it could also threaten your mental and physical health. Yet, many people just leave their communication skills to happenstance and live in a world of misunderstandings, hurt feelings, loss of relationships and business disasters. Quite often they look for outside reasons for challenges or failures. Yet, they can overcome the challenges.

History has shown just how vital communication is in order to grow, succeed and to become more than we are. When you look at the development of humankind and of our brains, you can understand the importance.

In a study on the development of humankind, it was stated that many versions of humans started out, but due to a variety of reasons, they didn’t survive and became extinct. The last two types stated to survive were the Neanderthals and the Homo sapiens. There has been much debate as to whether they were two subsets of one species or two distinct species.

The one thing agreed upon was that other than the difference in the brow bone and chin that the two were more similar than any other versions and that they both had a larger brain than the previous. They could tell that the Neanderthals could think out problems, as they had created tools and buried their dead. Therefore, they couldn’t understand why they became extinct.

A scientist recently discovered one difference between the two. He noticed that when he turned the skull upside down and looked at the base of the brain area that the Neanderthals had a flat base, where as Homo sapiens have a bulge downward.

This effects where are larynx is located. The Neanderthals would be higher up and unable to make many of the sounds that Homo sapiens do. They wouldn’t be able to make the vowel sounds. In other words, they weren’t able to communicate and connect with others on a higher level in the same manner as Homo sapiens. It is believed that this inability to communicate as well as is what eventually lead to their extinction.

This shows that intelligence on its own, is not a guarantee to be able to succeed in life. Your ability to communicate well, will enable you to survive and excel business and life.

However, our communication abilities don’t end there. Much of our primary motor cortex in out brain is related to communication. In other words, a big chuck of our higher advanced brain in the motor cortex, was designed to enable us to communicate more efficiently. This relates to our hands, face tongue and larynx.

When we communicate, our message that we give has more meaning than just the words. Our message is sent in part by body language, tone and emphasis.
Body language includes, use of our hands and facial expressions. Our tongue and larynx give tone, pitch and emphasis. It is these fine details that has enabled us to more clearly define our motives, beliefs, understanding, intentions and desires that we want. It has enabled us to advance in ways that we would never have been able to without our ability to communicate our thoughts, feeling and ideas.

Do You Hope That Others Will Read Your Mind?

Do you or anyone else you know, expect others to read their mind?

This is a common trait especially with family, spouses and close friends.
You lose all control of your life when you do this. You are leaving probably the most important issues and decisions of your life on the hope that the other person will know what you are thinking and feeling. Then when they don't or mis-guess, well, then there is hell to pay.

Often this comes from an underlining feeling of, If you loved me then... (Fill in the dots)

Did you know that this causes you to toss away you power, confidence and the ability to communicate with others?

The challenge with this, is that you are leaving yourself vulnerable to other people's wishes, beliefs and understandings. And most people misunderstand another without having the added burden of being expected to read minds.

I have seen people cry and state that their birthday or other event was ruined because the other person, husband, boyfriend, etc., didn't do what they wanted them to do. When I ask if they told them what they wanted, I get a No, I can't do that they should have just known.

Well if it is that important, then why don't you say so? Why are you leaving your happiness to someone else's guessing?

When you take back your power and life and communicate your desires, you will find yourself being a much happier, confident and self-empowered person.

Could you explain why Quantum Physics and neuroscience

Sure Sue,

You see, when you communicate with someone you have
a goal to have that message get across to another person
or people.

However, quite often our message doesn't reach the other
person as intended. There are many things that get in
the way. It takes more than knowing your nouns, verbs
and adjectives to tell others your message.

It is my desire to help you overcome your barriers to
communication. Therefore, I help to teach and guide you
past them, by showing you what barriers exist.

Through my past training and experience I have come to
understand just how much that our beliefs, attitudes and
experiences can block our messages from getting across.

As well, I have seen how so many people with the
understanding of Quantum Physics, that are now are
having great success in communicating and connecting
with others.

I realize that some people get nervous just hearing the
word Quantum Physics, however, this is not about doing
math equations, its about understanding how it can help
you. And how and why we attract things & events into
our lives

To put it in perspective, you don't need to know all of the
workings and why's of a car, to get you from A to B. You
only need to know how to drive it. They are tools to
assist you. And even to have fun with.

Gatekeeping, Your Brains Ultimate Secretary

Picture a secretary or assistant in your brain. They are the gatekeepers of information. The information they stop is anything that your subconscious self does not accept as true.

We take on beliefs as we are growing up that may not align with our beliefs today, which can stop you from succeeding in life.

Challenges with this can be compounded when you are working with co-workers or clients. You see the other person also has their own gate keeping system.

An example of these beliefs: you may believe that the road to success is easy with the right tools.However, the subconscious is playing a tape from childhood that is saying, "Yeah right, you know that it's a struggle and most people don't make it."

The result is that your gatekeeper will keep back success opportunities from you. It believes that it is doing you a favour. It doesn't want you to prove yourself wrong or create conflict in your mind and risk stress and anxiety that may come from conflicting beliefs. So the results are, that you will not see what is
right in front of you.

There are ways to find out and ways to remove beliefs that don't serve you. First, look around at your life. Is it the one you want? Are there things lacking and missing? If not then the odds are that you have conflicting beliefs.

Start journaling and ask your self. Just what do I believe? And for each answer ask, "Does this serve me?" If the answer is no, then you need to replace it. For some people the changes come fast. For others that have several deeply ingrained beliefs, they may need help from professionals that are trained in replacing old beliefs.

I have personally found that those with an understanding of Quantum Physics, have helped countless people change their lives. As well, there are many counselors and coaches that can help.

In any case, with help you can move forward in life and place what you desire on your RAS’s important list. Then watch the opportunities start to appear.

Need To Gain Energy?

Emotional Energy

When we are tired, it is hard to communicate. Our thinking cells don’t function and even if we try to continue, the effort and results will be mediocre at best.

It is important to realize that our energy levels are affected by the state of our emotions. And our emotions are a result of our perceptions on our outlook on the events of our lives. (Reread that if needed and let it sink in)

We act in accordance to our beliefs. And our actions can then cause that outcome to manifest.

Author Mira Kirshenbaum, author of THE EMOTIONAL
ENERGY FACTOR wrote about how our emotions dictate
our energy level.

"It is estimated that a whopping 70% of our energy comes from our emotional state of mind as apposed to the food we eat or the exercise that we do."

Our positive emotions of love, joy, excitement, compassion, create energy within us. These are the driving forces that can help us excel in our accomplishments.
They enable us to create and implement more ideas and inspire us to do more.
They attract other successful people to us and radiate potential.

Whereas negative emotions such as anger, hatred, fear, worry anxiety etc.
drain us of our energy. They literately zap and drain us of our abilities to change whatever we do not like. They can stop us in our tracks from moving forward. They leave us with little more energy then to just sit and complain about the world rather than being part of the change. AND, this attracts other complainers with little or no energy.

To increase your emotional energy, you need to look at two things.

1. Know what it is that drains you; (learn to avoid them)
a. Life situations
b. Toxic people
c. Habits of worry, guilt, fear, indecision, envy
d. Unfinished business; whether its cleaning,paper work or clearing the air

2. Know what it is that fills you (and give yourself more)
a. Prayer
b. Meditation
c. Hobbies
d. Walks or reading

If we can use positive emotion energy when thinking about what we do want, we will attract the life we desire. Moreover, we will have the energy to go after it.
So ask yourself, where is my emotional energy, and what is it doing to me?

If anyone wants to understand or see what what happened in
New Orleans, I was sent this powerpoint, showing the storm and
the courageous volunteers.
Right now they are being hit again along with other cities. They have
even put Huston Texas, on alert where many refugees went,
are being evacuated from there.

Right now we need to send them good thoughts of safety
and protection,and not ones of fear and devastation.
Thoughts of the storm dieing down.

The Great USA

Dr. Joe Vitale has sent an article about the importance
of watching our thoughts. He spoke about how if we believe
we are victums then we are. If we are in fear that the storm
will get us it has.

He states that it is important not to ignore the storm, but not
to getcaught up in fear mongering and with luck, by the time it
hits mainland Texas,it will have dropped to a category 1 hurricane.

He notes that people seem to say and breath victim
That we are victims of
storms
chance
of a poorly run government
of gas prices, gas shortages
inflation, recession, taxes, wars, and now...
the worst of all -- Mother Nature.
He goes on to say
"it may upset some people. I'm hoping it will
inspire you.
Here goes:
You have more power than you think
While you may not want to stand in the path
of Rita, you don't have to cower under the bed
As odd as it may sound, I believe that if enough
of us think positive, we can create a counter
storm of sorts. We can protect ourselves and
our loved ones with our thoughts."

He is not saying to ignore the storm, only not to get
caught up in the fear that the storm warnings often bring.
Happiness is a choice.

Too often, we are only half listening to what people are saying.
This can be because we believe we know what the other person is going to say or because our mind is on something else. Sometimes we think we understood, but don't clairify to find out if infact we did hear it right.

Never the less, too often disasters happen because of mis-communication and the lack of clarification. It is up to you to do something about it.

I know about an example when the supervisor, who while heading out for the night, said, "Don, turn off the suds machine" Don thought he heard, "Don't turn off the suds machine", so he shrugged and thought, Ok and walked on. Check out the results of a miss-communciation at an airport hanger.

Which Word Was Right?

Some people don't know where they want to go but complain a lot about not getting there. Decide not to be one of them. by Lee L. Jampolsky, Ph.D.

Quite often I have people say to me, "Maria, we could really use help around her with our communication skills, and especially with the email. We have had several people upset due to misunderstandings."

Many people and organizations face this problem because several of the communication elements are left out of message.
You see when we are communicating with another person, the words we use are only 7% of the total sum of the meaning. 38% is tone and 55% is body languages.

One of the reasons that we rely so much on the tone and body is because of the homonyms and synonyms in our language. The words are easily misunderstood when reading them alone.
Some examples are:

The farm was used to produce, produce

He could lead, if he could get the lead out

Upon seeing the tear in the painting, I shed a tear

The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert

The bandage was wound around the wound

Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present

There are many ways to help you improve your communication skills and working relations. Many are simple and help you with production, time and team works.

Intentions, What are Yours?

When engaged in communication with another person, we
must be aware of our intentions, with the message that we
want to get across.

Are you trying to inform, coercion, manipulate,
inspire, persuade, or control?

To be effective, it is important to know and realize what we
are trying to accomplish before we begin. Sometimes people
are not aware of what their intentions are.

They believe that they are trying to persuade, when in fact
what they are doing is manipulating and forcing control over
the other person. When we do that, we all lose out in the end.
People will be cautious about interacting with you in the future,
which leads to communication breakdown.

Do you ever stop to think about what your intensions are
before speaking?

Have you ever felt that someone was trying to coerce or
manipulate you into agreeing? And how did that make you feel?

These important questions can help you to figure out what
your intentions are and ask yourself, 'Is there a better
way to do this?'

The Levels of The Communication Connection

I had requests to explain what the levels of the
communication connection are. And as one person
put it, Just what is Intrapersonal Communications?
So, by request, here is the basics of the levels.

Levels of the Communication Connection

There are three basic levels of communication.
Each level of communication is essential as it affects
the others. And each level needs to be developed to
enable us to effectively and efficiently get our
message across.

The different levels of communication:
intra, inter & mass.

Intrapersonal = communication with self

Interpersonal = communication with one or small group

Mass = communication with large groups of people

We begin by communicating well with ourselves (intra).
Only then can we begin to have effective communication
with another person or a small group (inter).
Once we master this, then can we move on to effectively
communicate to the (mass).

Ask yourself how you felt you were unable to get your
message across. At what level did you think or feel that
the problem might be related to?
Step one is to start noticing where you are having the
challenges. Think about the benefits of improving your
skills and where you can go by mastering your communication.

Why I Communicate Gratitude

Many times I have either read or heard about the power of gratitude. It states that you cannot get more in your life until you are grateful for what you already have.

That at times can be a hard pill to swallow. There are times when you look around and think, how can I be grateful when it seems like so many things in my life are in turmoil? How can I appreciate my relationships, family, health, finances or job when I am not happy with them?

Often when we look back on things that we have been through, we realize that if we hadn't gone through what seemed like something terrible, then we wouldn't have had some other wonderful thing happen in our lives.

Often it can be a very important lesson that has guided us through many other events in our lives. Or it can alter our path to one of great joy and happiness. Too often we decide quickly that something was good or bad with out waiting to see.

It can help to remember that there are many people in the world, who have never talked on a phone, rode in a car, had a roof over their head or fresh water to drink. Many people don't even live long enough to know what its like to be an adult.

I have stated many times that what you focus on and communicate to your self and others is what you will attract into your own life. And, when we are focusing on what we don't like or what we are not grateful for, we are attracting more of of the same.

You can start to realize the many things to be grateful for in your life by doing a short journal on five things that you're grateful for each day. It can be as simple as; I am grateful that I was able to get up this morning. Or, I am grateful that I have a job. You can expand it from there.

Many people have stated that once they started the process, they realized just how much they had to be grateful for. And it was at this point that their lives started changing.

Do You Hear That?

I read a report in the Toronto Star stated that 70% of workplace errors happen because of communication breakdown and that many of them directly relate to a lack of listening skills.

The challenge is most people filter out sounds, noises and people talking as much as they filter out most of the things their eyes see.

On one level, this is important. You would go crazy if you processed everything that you heard and you would never be able to have a conversation with a person in a crowded room. However, we get in this habit so much of the time that we literately filter out things that are important to us.

I have heard about many team projects that had disastrous results where the people involved "heard" something different and had a different view of the outcome.

It shows how, what we heard is our interpretation of what we think they said, after it has gone through our brain filtering system. I have seen many people hold grudges days, over what they believed was said, and not what the person actually said.

The benefits that come from improving your listening skills can mean the difference between moving ahead in your career, knowledge and skills or falling behind and wondering why.

Some of the benefits are:
Resolves Conflict - You are able to understand the other person better which leads to resolutions.
Increases performance – When everyone is working on the same goal, you can perform like a well-oiled machine and everyone wins in the end.
Increases your knowledge - Chances are you will learn important information and ideas that will help you.

There are many ways to improve your listening.
Some of them are:

Make sure you are not talking
Remove distractions i.e. TV, radio, other people

Your body is listening to you?

Previously, I talked about how Quantum physics, which is the study of the building blocks of the universe, tells us that everything is made up energy. It shows us that everything we experience including everything perceived as solid, can be reduced to frequencies or vibrations.

And how we attract people that are on the same frequency that we are at and to change this, it is important to change the way you communicate with yourself.

Now you may be wondering, what quantum physics and biology have to do with one another. Many biologist used to think, nothing. However, more and more are seeing the amazing connection.

Each of the cells has a receptor antenna and they can read vibrational energy fields. These include light, sound and radio. More importantly, if the energy vibration resonates with the receptor antenna, it can alter physical and chemical properties of an atom, which will alter the receptor.

You see, are cell are always "reading" the environment in order to survive and can be physically be altered to protect ourselves or help ourselves grow based on our perceptions of the environment around us.

To enhance themselves, atoms find vibrations that create harmonic resonance. Remember the mastermind group. At the cellular level, when we are on a path to growth, we are healthier around those that are on a positive path to growth as well.

It is also important to look at our emotions in how we view the world and whether we hang on to resentments. Dr Candice Pert wrote a book called, "The Molecules of Emotions."

Dr Pert showed how our emotions affect how we think, feel and behave on an ongoing basis. Also, how our perceptions are of the world, creates these emotions at the cellular level. Our emotions are made in the cells of the body and brain through a chemical binding to specific receptors on the surface of the cells, which are based on how our cells perceive our environment and act on it.

It is also here where unexpressed emotions are stored. Unexpressed emotions in the receptors squeeze off the food that the cell needs to function. This breaks down your ability to think and see things clearly.

Consider that there is not one new function in our body that is not already in the cell. The cell has a nervous, skeletal, circulatory, integument (skin), reproductive and immune system. This also shows the connection to the holographic world where the all of it is in every bit of it, and every bit of it and in the all of it. We are all connected.

Einstein showed how matter can be simultaneously be defined as a solid (particle) and as a force field (wave)
E=MC² shows that the universe is one indivisible dynamic whole in energy and matter in which they are interchangeable and not independent elements.

This has been a brief introduction into the world of quantum physics and communication. There is so much more to this amazing world that can open you up to a world of possibilities.

Previously, I talked about how Quantum physics, which is the study of the building blocks of the universe, tells us that everything is made up energy. It shows us that everything we experience including everything perceived as solid, can be reduced to frequencies or vibrations.

And how we attract people that are on the same frequency that we are at and to change this, it is important to change the way you communicate with yourself.

We are electromagnetic spectrums of energy and have a unique energy signature. This force can enable us to achieve what we believe. Consider the placebo effect where people took sugar pills and were cured of their illness because they believed they would be.

Through out history we have heard, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, if only you believe. To tap into this and change your beliefs, it is important to realize that we do not see the world as it is. We see it as we are. That is the first step. I have heard it said that to create change, most often belief modification is required more than behaviour modification.

Just about every success story that I have read spoke about being in a mastermind group. It is considered one of the great success secrets of all time. Quantum Physics explains why. When you come together with like-minded people you are around those of the same frequency. When these waves overlap, the combined force amplifies resulting in a higher amplitude. This is called a Constructive Interference.

However, when you are around people that are not like you, it creates destructive interference. The 2 frequencies are out of phase and the waves become mirror-images of each others. This causes each wave to cancel each other out. Which cancels out the energy. Have you ever felt drained around some people? This is why.
John Assaraf states that he no longer will hang around negative people and that he most often runs from them.

We have the power and the ability to focus on what we want and attract it into our lives. Sure, there is some training necessary to break away from past beliefs and habits, but isn't it worth it in the end?

Quantum physics and Communication part 2

Last week I talked about how that Quantum physics, which is the study of the building blocks of the universe, tells us that everything is made up energy.
It shows us that everything we experience including everything perceived as solid, can be reduced to frequencies or vibrations.

Our brain interprets these vibrations and then reconstructs them into "solid reality"
At the quantum level we are all connected and we tend to attract people at the same frequencies that we are at. This can be the frequencies of our attitudes, beliefs or feelings at the moment.

Because our brain wants to seek out information that matches its belief system, it will attract other people, places, events and situations that coincide with that belief and it sends out a vibration, which is attracted to the same frequencies.

If you have heard the saying, “Birds of a Feather, Flock together”, you can understand the basis of the science. Before modern times with media, advertising etc, people of the same mindset found each other.

This is why so many of us get trapped into remaining at a level that we don’t want the to be at. We are attracting the same types of people, events and situations into our lives.

To change this, it is important to change the way you communicate with yourself. Look at what you are telling yourself. What are the attitudes that you are repeated. Your body is listening. If you state that it is a hard, cruel world, that is what you will manifest in your world. Subsequently, if you state that there are wonderful and helpful people you will find them.

It is important to tell and train your self to be open to learning new ideas and thoughts. We need to change our vibration level and then communicate with others at a higher level.
Science has seen the different vibrations that we are projecting.

Neg emotion- long and slow
Positive- shorter and faster.

Resentments, road rage etc, create low frequency vibrations.
This creates inability to create your desires.

However, quantum physics has also shown us the we have the amazing power to change our lives.

Quantum physics and Communication. Part 1

In the past, I have touched on the connection of quantum physics and communication. One of my passions is to understand the connection that we create on a much higher level.

I have received emails asking for more on this subject and it is my pleasure to bring you more. I can only touch the surface of this is rich and amazing subject in an email, yet still help you open the door to how it can help you in life and with your communication mastery.

First is to realize that Quantum physics, which is the study of the building blocks of the universe, tells us that everything is made up energy. Even our bodies, which are made up of cells, then atoms, which are made up of sub-atomic particles such as electrons.

Actually, everything is made up of 'large groups' of subatomic particles including plants trees, thoughts and light. The only difference is the way these particles are grouped together into the building blocks.

The studies now being done in the neurosciences have shown that thoughts are biochemical and electrical. They are real things. And that our mind is photons of light held in an electromagnetic field.

We as electromagnet beings of energy give off and pick up energy when we interact with other people. And there is a fundamental need in us to connect with one another.

The studies have also shown that we see the world not as it is, but as we are and when we go to connect or communicate with another person, it is based on our assumptions, beliefs, values, attitudes and intentions. The success or failure of the connection will be based on much of this.

There is also a need to have our external world to match our internal world. A person will sabotage what is before them if it doesn’t match our inner belief systems.

So how does this affect the way we communicate and the results we achieve.

Are ANT's Taking Over Your Life?

One of the first things that I work on with people having
trouble with communication is to look at what and how
they are communicating with themselves.

One area that stops people are ANTS.
These are automatic negative thinking.
There are several different ANT's and they can be so strong,
they stop people from succeeding.

Daniel G. Amen M.D. talks about them in his book,
"Change Your Brain Change Your Life".
He explains about the different types of ANTS and how they can
literately hurt your whole body system.

These negative thoughts actually affect your deep limbic
system in your brain. This can cause anxiety, anger, obsessiveness
and more creating a downward spiral.

Two of the deadly ANT's are, "mind reading" & "fortune-telling".
Guessing what the others persons actions are and re-acting on
that assumption. This creates a self-fulfilling prophecy.

A self-conversation can go something like:
"Jane didn't come and talk to me today. She must be
made at me. What did I do? Maybe she is avoiding me.
Maybe, she wants to promote Sally or Ted before me.
Why would she do that. I work hard and deserve the
promotion. I'll show her, she can't do that to me and get
away with it."

However, the truth is, we don't know what is happening with Jane.
She might not be feeling well. Maybe she is concerned about a family
member or friend. We just don't know,which is why it is important not to guess and to clarify with the person.

Overcoming your ANT's can help you move forward into a more creative and prosperous way of thinking.

Doug Bench, who teaches the neuroscience for the brain, understands just how dangerous these ANT's are and has created several tools to help people change their thinking including one called, "Stomping the ANT's", because he realizes the importance of removing them.

More and more this is being taught, because of the consequences that come from ANT's. and how many people's lives they destroy.

Networking is Communciating

I just returned from a business-networking meeting.

Victoria has many to choose from, depending on the area
you work in or the interests you have.

Some of them are more generalized for all business people,
like the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce.
They hosted the one tonight. There was an excellent
crowd and they always have a fabulous spread of food for
the people attending. The organizers do a great job and
host them at different places around the city.

Others are more specific, an example would be VIATeC
(Vancouver Island Advanced Technology Centre) and CIPS
(Canadian Information Processing Society) which are
aimed at the high tech market. There is also SME, (Sales
and Marketing Executives) and VIMPS (Vancouver Island
Meeting Planners Society), just to name a few.
What ever your interest or area of expertise, there is
probably a networking group to suit you.

But why attend.

Whether you are starting, developing, growing or even
have a successful business, it is important to get out and
meet people. The fact is people like to do business with
those they like, trust and can put a face to. And one of
the best ways you can do that is go out there and meet
people. Get to know them, greet them. Ask them
questions about what they do and learn what their needs
and desires are.

I have watched people attend the meetings and then
stand there in hopes that someone will come up and say
something. Although sometimes it seems they are hoping
no one will approach them. It is a shame really. There
are so many amazing and wonderful people in the world
and when you open up to meeting them, you discover
things, ideas and events that you would not normally
have experienced.

I have so many wonderful memories and experiences that
have come from meeting people and discovering new
ideas and ways of seeing life.

This can be possible for anyone of you. The first step is
to be willing. You can then learn what to do and how to
communicate with others around you.

I wish you all the best on your road to discovery of the
many delights before you.

Multi-Levels of Communication

Who you are and what you do is communicated on so many levels. The words you speak are but a small aspect of communication. And learning to have all your communciaion levels in alignment will give you the ability to take command and attract attention.

Many times people have trouble getting across what they want to tell the other people. There can be many reasons for this and it doesn't always come from not knowing what to say.

There are times when it comes from not being clear about who you are, what you want and the exact message that you want to give.

Quite often with either peer pressure or trying to look good to a person client or business, people will not remain true to who they are and what they are about. These incongruencies come across in what you say and do.

People will notice this and they will sense that something is not quite right about your message. This lowers the trust level and creates barriers.

There was a man who asked Mahatma Gandhi how he was able to speak for hours with out any notes.

He stated that it was because it came from his passion and that he was in alignment with his whole message.

He said that so many people will:
Think one thing,
Say another,
Feel a third
Then act in a forth manner.

They are trying to be too many things to too many people and then they have a hard time keeping it straight in their own mine.

This is why it is important to know and communicate with yourself first and know what it is that you want to state.

And remember the people will pick up your message that you are not in alignment.

A New Way to Easily Achieve Your Goals

I have had many people ask me what they need to communicate to achieve their goals and dreams. There is an way of being that can enhance you greatly along the way.

I've learned at least two things about achieving goals:
There is an easy way and a hard way.

The hard way is to work night and day, stay obsessed,
rarely sleep, and never give up.

Since everyone talks about the hard way, I want to
address the easy way. After all, why struggle if
you don't have to?

I've used the easy way to create bestselling books,
lose 70 pounds in 8 months, find my ideal mate,
get healthy, increase my wealth, and much more.

Obviously, it works.

Here's the formula in brief:

1. Be grateful for what you already have.

2. Playfully declare what you would like to have with
positive emotion, feeling as if it is already achieved.

3. Act on the nudges and opportunities that appear.

That's it. In my latest book, "The Attractor Factor,"
I explain a 5-step formula for getting what you want.
It's useful for those times when you don't feel
grateful, or can't decide on what you want, or
don't understand the concept of letting go while
taking inspired action. It's also helpful when you
have issues about money, or deserving, or feel
in any way blocked from your goals.

But the bottom-line for me is this: Declare what
you would like with no attachment and plenty of
good feeling, feel grateful for what you already
have, and act on what appears. The result will
be the manifestation of a happy life.

Let's explore this in depth.

1. Feel grateful now.

It doesn't mater where you live or what you have.
If you're reading this, you're most likely living like
a king or queen compared to people in third world
countries. You may even be living better than
kings or queens from history, as they often lived
in cold, violent, frightful times. You've got it made.

2. Choose what you want without attachment,
feeling as if it is already achieved.

There's magic in saying "Id love to---(fill in the
blank) but I won't die if I don't have it." Since the
world is simply energy taking form, when you
declare you want something, you begin to attract
it. But when you say you need something, the need
pushes it away. You want to select your desire,
and feel the joy of already having it, without feeling
any desperation. Need will push it away; Desire
will attract it. If you feel as if you *already* have it,
then you *will* have it.

3. Act on your opportunities and intuitions.

You may get offers, calls, or who knows what.
Act on them. You never know what will lead you
to your goal. Your ego cannot see the big picture.
Intuition and opportunities will come to you from
the larger view, and your job is to act on them.
As you do, you will be taken to your goal, even
when it appears you are being blocked away.
Trust is key.

Is that really all there is to it?

Again, the fuller procedure in "The Attractor Factor"
will take care of any snags in the process, but the
basic process is simple. Let's walk through it:

1. Look around your room. What are you grateful
for? Make a list. Get into the authentic feeling
of true gratitude. In other words, be happy now.
You don't need a reason to be happy. But if you
want one, find something, anything, to be grateful
for right now. When you're grateful, you're in a
mental place that will attract more to be grateful for.

2. Look around the playground of your mind.
What would you like to have, do, or be? What
would be fun? Write it down. As you do, feel
what it would be like to already have it now.
Pretend you won the lotto. What would you
want for yourself or others? What would be fun?
The key is playful non-attachment while
experiencing its completion *now.*

3. Now pay attention. As you go about your life,
listen to your hunches and act on them, and pay
attention to the opportunities and act on them.
You never know what will take you in the direction
of your goal. Your job is to take inspired action.
You may have some work to do in this step, but
the work will be from your heart, and will take
you in the direction of getting your goal.

Why not go through the steps right now?

Write them down, experience them, and then
check back in a few weeks and see how they
are doing. You may surprise yourself by how
easily and quickly your goals are achieved.

If you find yourself doubting the process,
thinking negative, or in any way not enjoying
the simplicity of the easy way to attain your
goals, then consider learning the 5 step
process in "The Attractor Factor."

Above all, have fun. Keep smiling. Be playful.
Stay grateful. These are all elements of the
new secret to manifesting your goals.

Remember the words of a famous song that
also perfectly summaries this new way to
achieve your goals: "Don't worry. Be happy."

Listening -The Lost Art of Communication

Quite often I have people saying to me things like, "Maria, I just can't seem to get my (kids, spouse, boss, employees, friends etc.) to listen. It is so frustrating, what do I do?"

One reason people have this challenge, is they do not understand that listening is a skill you need to learn. This is essential to be able to connect with others. It's a skill that has many aspects to it.

Listening is considered one of the most important skills in the work force.

Sadly, in most schools, it is never taught. Many teachers believe that if you can hear, then you can listen. But, hearing and listening are two very different functions.

It would be the same as saying, if you can see than you can read. If this were true than we should be able to read anything put in front of us in any language without any training.

Statistics show that many workplace disasters were a result of an inability to listen properly to instructions and then trying to guess what the person said or meant.

Many times people believe if someone is telling them about a challenge that they are having, that it is a cue to jump in and start solving the problem. However, most people wish only to have a sounding board and just to have you listen. To take over disempowers the other person.

For a first step on the road to understanding listening, I have seen this poem used in different communication courses.

Please Listen

When I ask you to listen,
And you start giving advice,
You have not done what I asked.

When I ask you to listen,
And you begin to tell me
Why I shouldn’t feel the way I do,
You are trampling on my feelings.

When I ask you to listen,
And you feel you have to do something
To solve my problem,
You have failed me,
Strange as that may seem.

Listen,
All I asked you to do was listen,
Not talk, or do-
Just hear me.

I can do for myself;
I am not helpless . . .
Perhaps discouraged or faltering,
But not helpless.

When you do something for me
That I need to do for myself,
You contribute to my fear and weakness,

But, when you accept the fact
That I feel what I feel
No matter how irrational,
Then I can get on with understanding
What’s behind that irrational feeling.

And, when that’s clear,
The answers will be obvious,
And I won’t need any
Advice.

Humour has an amazing ability to build a bond among people. When people laugh they connect at a higher level due to the release of endorphins in their system.
As well the pleasure enables what you are learning to enter through your amygdala in your brain, which increases learning and memory capabilities.

There are two aspects to communication and humour. One is more intentional and the other is a factor of the language itself which creates puns and faux pas.

I have seen people use humour as a way to calm their nerves down. They start reciting one-liners that are irrelevant or unrelated to the subject matter at hand. This generally bombs.
There is nothing worse than trying to sound funny and finding out you are getting no reaction from the audience.

I have also seen people go into areas that they think are funny, but the audience does not.
These can be in areas such as: sexist, racial, gender, blonde, cultural etc. It is important to consider your audience, and even if you think that they would like them, you don’t always know and it can be a very dangerous area to go into.

Most humour that succeeds are stories that relate either to the subject matter or to help get a point across. I know one man who didn’t even try to be funny. He just related some of his own mishaps along the way to where he has got in life, which came out hilarious. These are things that people can relate to or understand on some level.

The audience generally can see themselves in that predicament and visualize it in their heads.

To illustrate this, when we communicate with people there is a high probability for misunderstandings, which can take on some, very ironic or funny outcomes.

One area that causes problems for children and many adults, are the words don’t and not, which are abstract and do not register in the brain. They just see the words after don’t and not. For example if you said to a child, "Don’t spill the milk", their brains see, "Spill the Milk". And statistics show that 9 times out of 10 the child will spill the milk

I remember a time this person was heading to a donut shop and she asked if anyone would like anything. I said that she could grab me a muffin. When she asked what type, I said, oh anything as long as it is not bran or blueberry.

I could see her repeating to her self, no bran, no blueberry. When she got back, she handed me a large blueberry bran muffin. The two that I didn’t like nicely combined.

This is why we teach that you should be asking for what you do want as apposed to what you don’t want.

Metaphors can also be great when you enter humour through related stories, as people tend to listen more intently and remember more vividly. It is all about keeping it in tune with how you are and what you do.

The second area of humour comes from the fact that we have so many words with double meanings as well homonyms and synonyms.
Puns for example when used well can have people laughing or have people wanting to throw things at you.

Humor can also ease the tension in a discussion when there appears to be a conflict. When people are laughing they tend to find the middle ground easier. Sometimes using humor to break a pattern is enough to get the discussion back to problem solving instead of being stuck in an ego battle.

The best type of humor... That is when you can laugh at yourself, any mistakes you've made, continue on with a smile and know that you now have a new learning experience to grow on.

Intercultural Communication

Cultural differences are being dealt with more and more now a days and the ability to work well with all types of people enhances you and your business to greater opportunities and success.

As businesses expand globally and participate in outsourcing, there are guidelines to help you along the way.

I have worked in areas where I have had the opportunity to work with and discover different cultural differences in communicating and interacting.

One of those was the commonwealth games; we covered 2 years with the pre-games and then the actual event.

The people I met with ranged from athletes, coaches, media, production teams, dignitaries and royalties.

In each of the cultures, there were different protocols depending on status, jobs, and how each of them were raised.

What mattered to one individual was be considered irrelevant to another.
There was also the matter of how close you were to stand to the person, whether or not you looked them in the eye, and how you you dealt with different issues.

You can try to make everything just right only to find out the something was over looked or incorrectly interpreted or put together. The degree of importance will also vary.

There was one country who was very upset when they saw there flag. The said it was wrong. Quickly people jumped into place to find out why the wrong one was sent out. When they looked at the flag and the book it appeared to be the correct one. This confused them and when they asked what was wrong with the flag, the reply was look at the color, it is the wrong shade.

This was very important to them. And at an international event you want to make things right. Another flag was needed to replace the one we had.

My point is that you never know what kinds of challenges you will face and if you deal with them calmly, it will take you and your business far and you will be able to be able to embrace new opportunities and discover new friends and clients.

What's with UP?

I am blessed with friends that send me communication humour and I thought that it would be great to use this today on my birthday. I believe we can connect on a deeper level when we use humour appropriately.

Not only is it funny, it can also show you how easily words can be used in different manners that can create confusion and misunderstanding.
While seeing the humour in this, take time to note how one word can be so interchangeable.

So what is this stuff about English being easy? There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word in the English language -- and that is the word "UP."

It's easy to understand UP (meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list) but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends and we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.

At other times the little word has real special meaning.
People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning, but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP !

To understand the proper uses of UP, look it UP in the dictionary. In a desk size dictionary, the word up takes UP almost a quarter page and it adds UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP .

When it rains, it wets UP the earth. When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so...I'll just shut UP !

The Benefits Of Working With The Media

There are many benefits to your business by working with the media.
Yet, many people have an immediate reaction and want to go running
for cover and hide from them.

Yet, Credibility, Attention and Expert status and a couple of benefits
you can acquire.

There is a famous proverb states that:
“one cannot not communicate”.
This is important to remember and if you choose not to work with
them, you are still giving a message.

The great PT Barnum stated just before he passed on that
he credited the media for his mass fortune and great success.

Let's look at some benefits:

When you learn the protocol for interacting with the media, it can turn into a wonderful and profitable experience for both the business and media.

The media can supply you with some very valuable free coverage and coverage that is third party. This coverage gives credibility to what you are doing or saying. The public will trust an article in the media more than they will an ad. They see it as an unbiased evaluation of what you are about and whether or not you can be trusted.

You are giving them a message that you want delivered verses one that they think you are saying.

Always remember that we need a symbiotic relationship with the media. There will be times when you want to announce an upcoming event,a breakthrough or change in your organization etc. How you have treated them in the past will affect what kind of coverage you will get and whether it is good or not.

Should something happen that could be negative,the media may write the story whether you cooperate or not. For the most part, it is better to have your comments included rather than them only having half the facts or speculation to go on.

If you are concerned about how you or a member of your company may act toward the media, you can learn the protocols and understand the do's and don'ts. This way you can insure that each person in your organization would know how to respond (AND NOT REACT) and know where to direct the media.

Media Relations can be one of the most important and critical elements of any operation. See the media as one of your most important audiences whether it is to promote or uphold your image, or to get valuable information out to the public.

There are basics that you can learn in; how to dress, answer questions,understanding predictable verse unpredictable events, damage control,internal concerns, types of media and more.

Remember that we need to engage with the media, not defeat them. The person we defeat today will probably be the person whose cooperation we need tomorrow.

Conflict Resolution -When Safety is an Issue

Conflict generally arises by having your needs, desires,
perceptions and values challenged.

When a person feels that their values are being challenged
they generally respond the strongest. Inwardly they feel
their personal safety threatened and desire to stop that
threat.

Issues not dealt with, they can become a trigger for the
people involved.

We can see the reason when we look at the three parts of
the resolution.

Content: Is the issue to be resolved.
Process: How we talk to and treat each other. Allowing
people to feel heard and acknowledged.
Emotion: How we feel about what happened. If we are
angry, we shut down our thinking process and the conflicts
rarely get resolved.

Many things trigger emotions; the history between the people or organization,
the issue or events.

One important aspects is not to jump into solution right away.
Many times important elements or ideas can be over looked.
As well, when we don’t give people a chance to come up with their
own solutions, we disempower them.

It is essential when you want a strong working team to
give the belief of trust in the other person to come up with
his or her own solutions whenever possible.

In business, there are situations where time is of the
essence, and you need to act, however, done too often will lead to
a breakdown in trust and performance by workers and partners.

It is important not to generalize. Stating observable facts
in a neutral tone with open the doors to resolution. People
who feel attacked will close down and fight and solutions.

There are many aspects to conflict resolution and some
things seem like they are harder to deal with. However, in
the end, when trust and respect are a part of your
atmosphere, you will find greater success and
achievements in all of your endeavors.

Slangs, What Challenges are they Causing for You?

As a society, we get so used to using slang's that we stop realizing that we are even using them. The slangs can even differ from one part of the country that you are living in to another.
I have spoken to people who have learned English as a second language, received an A in class and still didn't understand what was being said because of the amount of slang words being used.
Even in different industries, we start using jargons and slangs that others wouldn't understand unless they were in that industry.
Many sports minded people use the sport terminology in business such as, "carry the ball" or "he sure dropped the ball on that one."
Even the dictionaries are now entering some of the more commonly used slangs.
The Merriam- Webster dictionary added these examples:

Headbanger- a hard rock musician and a fan
Dead presidents- Paper currency
Prairie Gophering – people who peer above their cubicles at work.
McJob- Low paying and dead-end work.
Comb-over- an attempt to cover a bald spot

Therefore, when you are trying to communicate and get a message across, it is important to ask yourself, am I using slangs, could this be miss-interpreted. It is when we stop and look at the details that many misunderstandings are alleviated.

Sadly, one of the fastest ways to communicate or get a message across is to gossip or to tell someone that it is gossip.
Gossip is one of the most destructive forces in nature. It has torn apart innocent lives and caused the breakdown of many businesses.
It destroys trust and creates fear.
Many people are afraid to speak up against a gossiper in fear that they might be the next target. Yet, when we don't take a stand, we are contributing to continued use of gossip.

Those that like to gossip don't realize that they are hurting themselves as well as the person that they are talking about.
Many times they are doing it to cover up their own insecurities, instead of resolving them. Some will say that they aren't gossiping and will come out with somethings like, Did you hear what so and so is saying about....

They try to justify that it is the other person doing it and they are only showing what is being said. However, they are just as much a part of it.
Many times we contribute to the gossip by what we do or don't do, yet if we want to have a healthy trusting environment to work and live in, we must be part of the solution.

Then we can grow, prosper and attract like minded people into our lives,
instead of those that would hurt or harm others.

There are many ways to deal with negative and gossiping people.
Joe Vitale in his new book 'The Attractor Factor' showed how
Socrates' would deal with gossipers.
(Paraphrased)
When someone wanted to tell him something, he would stop them and ask three questions.
1.What you are about to tell me, do you personally know it to be true.
2. Is is about someone you personally know.
3. Is it positive or negative.
He would then say, so you want to tell me something, that you don't personally know to be true about someone you don't really know and it is negative. Then I will pass.

I also read a story about a Buddha who sat quietly while a person insulted him. Once the man was done, the Buddha looked at him and said, "Sir, if a man offered another person a gift and the gift was refused, to whom would the gift belong?"
"Why the person that offered it", reply the man.
"Then", said the Buddha "I respectfully decline your offer of abuse and you may keep it for yourself."

How To Write Good

1. Always avoid alliteration.
2. Never use a long word when a diminutive one will do.
3. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc.
4. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.
5. Remember to never split an infinitive.
6. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos.
7. One should never generalize.
8. Comparisons are as bad as clichés..
9. Don't be redundant; don't use more words than necessary;
it's highly superfluous
10. Be more or less specific.
11. Who needs rhetorical questions?
12. One-word sentences? Eliminate.
13. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake.
14. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.
15. Even if a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.
16. Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.
17. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.
18. Don't never use a double negative.
19. Verbs have to agree with their subjects.
20. Don't overuse exclamation marks!!!!!!!

While I was at the Marketing Seminar, I noticed a theme running through many of the speakers. It was more of a quality that they embraced.

You see marketing is another form of communication. You want to let your audience know what it is you have to for sale, the features and most importantly the benefits to the consumers and clients.
However, there were speakers that could touch you at a depth of understanding that made them amazing in their delivery. They have heart and connect with others.

Excessive Communication

I took a redeye to San Antonio Texas from Victoria. It took over 11 hours to get there when you add in waits between flights. ON the Seattle to Dallas flight, most of the passengers turned off their lights right away and went to sleep.
I felt exhaustion building from my hectic schedule and closed my eyes to catch
some sleep. I was almost there when a loud bell went Ding!
and a Bright "fasten your seatbelts" light came on.

Then the captain stated over the speakers, we are experiencing some turbulence and wanted to ensure that your seatbelts are fastened.
I could tell that this startled awake several people; however, we drifted
off again to much needed slumber, when at some point, DING! -Bright light
and the same announcement. This can be very hard on the nerves. Some people wondered why they needed to communicate this to sleeping people.
That would have been bad enough, but this happened about five more times.
It was suggested that the pilot was a sadist and one other person felt that the
bell should be placed somewhere.

The point here is that sometimes we can over communicate a message or even
sometimes complicate a message. We can ask ourselves, what is the message
that I need to get out and how many times do I need to repeat before it gets annoying instead of helpful.

Now clarity and repetition are an important part of learning and getting your message across, but balance and understanding of the other person's perception are also important factors.

We can ask ourselves, what our message is, how important is it and what is the
best way to handle it. Also, is a direct or subtle approach better and is
there a different way to handle this.

In the case of the redeye flight, the stewards could have kept an eye out for
anyone that may have been awake to let hem know to keep their seatbelts on.
I have heard that some corporations and governments say that it is a necessity because of liability issues. Yet, if we think about it, there can still be other ways of fulfilling these responsibilities to your customers by getting your message across without making them into a nervous wreck.

By putting some thought in how you will deliver your message can go a long way in buildiing customer relations.

Have you Mind Mapped?

I mind map.
Mind maping is communication with your subconscious.
I feel it is an important tool for focusing on what you desire and communicating that to the different levels of your brain to attract your
desire in life.

Some people call it treasure mapping. Which ever words you like, use them.
The important thing is to have a visual representation of what you want to attract in your life, and to communicate to all levels of your brains inner working systems.

In the past, I had listen to many successful people talk about their mind / treasure maps. How they felt it was in intricate part of their success in life. One person, John Assaraf, said that he had created one and stared at it for a long time. (For anyone who doesn't know John, he is an amazing rags to richs story) After a while he had put it away. One day after he moved, his son noticed it in a box and asked him about it, he explain to his son what it was and said look, there is a Rolex watch on her and see daddy has one now too. Then he realized that he had manifested everything else as well. That the picture of his desired home, was the very same one that they had moved into.

Last summer, when I created the one in my office, I put a picture of a cruise ship on the map. I thought it would be great to do a seminar on a cruise ship. There are many different cruise ships, so I just found a picture and put it up. When I was accepted into Joel's mentorship program, he told me later that we were going to go on a cruise in October 2005. I thought, yes it has come true. However, I was not aware on just how much. You see just over a week ago, Joel told me the name of the cruise ship, so I looked it up on the internet and it is the very one that I have on my mind map.

So, my question to you is, are you willing to communicate at this level and truly attract your desires in life?

What Is Your Focus?

I have had people ask me what my secret is for attracting the
life that I desire. They were stating how dismal theirs is and about
everything that is going wrong.

Well, their question answered itself. For what we communicate
with ourselves, we attract. Repeatedly, it has been said stated for
at least the last 2 centuries that what we focus on we attract. Actually
even longer than that, as I was reading a story written in the 1600's about
the very same idea, and when the author understood this principle his life
literally went from rags to riches.

As long as you focus on and communicate to yourself what you don't
want, like or need that is exactly what you are going to bring more
of in your life. This ties in with quantum physics and realizing the
endless possibilities we have before us.

Many of these people will then say, how can I not focus on all of the
problems in my life when I have to deal with them. They are so
focused on the problems that they can't see the solutions.
Yet, that is what is causing the challenges. You need to focus on the solutions.
When you focus on the solutions you find answers to your challenges.

Quantum Physics Helps

I love quantum physics.
And I loved the movie "What the Bleep do we Know?"

The possibilities are endless and so much of what we have yet to discover can alter our existence in amazing and wonderful ways. We are powerful beings and the scope of our capabilities is just beginning to be discovered.

I think that is what attracted me to read Psycho-cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz and Dan Kennedy. They talk about focusing on a clear picture in your mind and playing out the details of what you want to have, do or be. So much of what and how we communicate with ourselves will ultimately affect what we attract into our lives and what we become.

Science is showing how our brain has an amazing ability to grow and that anyone has the capability to succeed. The important starting point is having that clear mental picture in your mind of what you want to attract. See it vividly and have feeling about it. For what you focus on you attract.

Dr. Robert Anthony teaches this fundamental point in his course on how to attract wealth. He has a huge following of people who lives have turned around by his teachings. I love his books and his courses.

I was the moderator in an interview Wednesday night, with Carl Turner (the right hand man to Jay Abraham) and John Assaraf, who went from being a street kid in trouble to running billion dollar businesses.
He said that his life changed after he went to a seminar on quantum physics. He realized that your thoughts are your seeds of what you are going to manifest in your life. John now helps other overcome their blocks and succeed.

I will meet John and several others in March when I am in Texas. As a co-mc, I get to introduce these amazing people to a host on entrepreneurs and like-minded people.

So much of my life has turned around when I understood that truly anything is possible. It reminds me of the Santa Clause movie when the elf said, most people have it backwards, they think seeing is believing, but believing is seeing, and that is what quantum physics teaches you.

You first have to know what you want, which can be a challenge to many people.
Mark Twain once said, I can help anyone get what they want; the problem is I can't find anyone who knows what they want.

As a communicator, people will send me many different things on language and communicating. Following is one of those; enjoy

English is a Crazy Language

There is neither egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger ....
Neither apple nor pine in pineapple.

English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France.

Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. However, if we explore its paradoxes,
we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square
and a guinea pig is neither a pig nor from Guinea.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing,
grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth?
One goose,
2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese?
One index, 2 indices?

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,
what do you call it? (Answer- Is it odd that you have just one?)

If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed
to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

Ship by truck and send cargo by ship?

Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same,
while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at a language in which your house can burn up
as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out
and in which; an alarm goes off by going on.

People, not computers, invented English and it reflects the creativity
of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.

That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible,
but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

And finally, why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'Quick'?

Unless you've been under a rock for the last year, you've
heard the term "blog" once or twice.

To most people, a "blog" simply represents a glorified
online "diary" where geeks, computer nerds, and lonely
teenagers record their thoughts in cyber-space.

However, many people don't realize that "blogs" are quietly
revolutionizing the way companies and customers interact
about everything from existing products to new ideas and
improvements in customer service.

In short, "blog" style communication has come of age and
anyone with an online business better sit up and take
notice fast!

In the beginning, "blogs" were basically an online diary to
record your thoughts; but "blogs" have now evolved into
dynamic websites that non-technical people can update
immediately without html editors or ftp programs.

Blogs allow their authors to make instant website updates
through a computer anywhere in the world with a Web browser
and Internet connection.

Blogs also allow readers to respond to the author's posts,
provide additional information, links, expanded opinions,
and more.

In short, an active "blog" creates an interactive community
with the author as the hub and the readers as the spokes of
the wheel that keep the whole cycle turning round.

Unlike traditional "static" web pages where content rarely
(if ever) changes, an active blog evolves in a state of
constant and never-ending renewal.

With blogs, smart online businesses re-discovered a
principal that small "mom and pop" stores understood for
years: know your customers and stay in close tune with
their wants, needs, and desires.

Large companies throw billions of dollars down a black hole
every year to literally "guess" what people want to buy.
Most call it the "Marketing Department."

On the flipside, smart online businesses understand that
blogs allow you to avoid guessing what's on your customers'
minds and provide an active and up-to-the-minute means for
them to tell you exactly what they do and don't like about
your services, products, and virtually any other aspect of
the market.

This lightning fast communication makes it possible for
small companies to literally snatch huge market share away
from more traditional companies.

Blogging also has a distinct advantage over traditional
email newsletters in that subscribers can get udpates
without having to receive an email message. Through the
power of RSS (real simple syndication), subscribers get
notified of updated content though an rss news reader.

Bottom Line: publishing a blog with an RSS feed that your
readers can subscribe to means your content NEVER gets
blocked by a SPAM filter.

Blog software basically comes in 2 flavors: hosted and
stand-alone. Hosted blogging solutions make it extremely
easy to get set up with a blog, often in just a couple of
minutes.

If you know how to type, you can create a blog. Log on to
Blogger.com and you can set up a blog free of charge and
start posting in just a few minutes.

Blogger.com (owned by search giant, Google) will even host
your blog on their servers.

Typepad.com, which charges as little as $4.95 per month, is
also an excellent hosted service offering additional
features that enable you to quickly get your own blog up
and running.

The alternative is stand-alone blogging software installed
on your own website.

A very popular solution is Moveable Type, available from
moveabletype.org, which provides a very versatile and
powerful suite of tools for creating a full-featured blog
to rival that of any size company in the world.

When you are communicating, you are connecting with other people.

As humans we are electromagnetic spectrums of energy, and how we feel about something and even more importantly, about someone, will affect how we communicate and how the other person or people communicate back with us.

We can sense or perceive the feelings of another. The other person may say that they are feeling fine or that they are ok, but we may get what we call vibes. This is our intuitions or gut feelings.
Feelings of anger and love or joy, vibrate at a different levels in our bodies, and when the other person is emitting strong feelings, you will be able to pick this up.

Our emotions also come out in our body language. So if you are feeling angry, mad, and sad or frustrated; you are probably tensed up and your body shows it even if you say you are fine.
When you say one thing and give off energy of another thing, you lose credibilty.
It is important that what you say, do, think and feel is in alignment. And to remember that people are going to pick up on this.
Before you speak to someone, especially if it is an important meeting, you should ask yourself, how do I feel about this person and how am I going to come across?

Asking these questions before hand can help put you in a better frame of mind that will enable you to connect with the other person or people at a higher level.

Etymology- How Words Change

Etymology is the study of the origins words.

As languages develop the meaning of words can change over time. This causes confusion and misunderstanding when communicating with other people.

On the positive side of the changes, it has been noted over time that languages that stay alive, adapt and grow over time.

An example would be the word nice. Nice used to be an insult and meant foolish or stupid in the 13th century and it went through many changes right through to the 18th century with meanings like wanton, extravagant, elegant, strange, modest, thin, and shy or coy. Now it means a good & pleasing or thoughtful & kind.

Silly meant blessed or happy in the 11th century and went through pious, innocent, harmless, pitiable and feeble minded before ending up as foolish or stupid.

Pretty started as crafty this changed to clever or skillfully made, then to fine and ended up as beautiful.

Some other changes are:

Word ______ Original Meaning
Awful________ Deserving of awe
Bead _________Prayer
Brave_________ Cowardice (as in bravado)
Girl__________ Young person of either sex
Neck_________ Parcel of land (as in neck of the woods)
Nuisance______ Injury, harmSophisticated Corrupted

You can learn about more about how words change in the study of etymology.
This then can be another reminder to us, especially when it is important to have clarity or uniform goal setting. That what a word means to us, may not have the same meaning to someone else.

INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

What is intrapersonal communication?
It is communicating with yourself.

Most people and courses bypass this very important and crucial step in being able to communicate. You must be able to communicate with yourself before you can communicate with others. This is something that I repeat and a point that I try to drive home, due the essential nature of this first step in connecting with others.

It can be surprising the number of people who do not know what they want or where they want to go and hope that other people will figure it out for them. I have seen these same people get upset when others are unable to mind read for them, what they have been unable to discover for themselves.

Many people have stated that much of their stress in life is from a feeling of not having any control in their lives. The essential first step in gaining control is getting a clear understanding with yourself, on what you want. Then you must be able to figure out the details of that desire and the steps necessary to achieving it.

We need to do this in all areas of our lives, and have an idea, in each area, how we would like to achieve it. This puts you in the driver’s seat of your life. You can be the one in control instead of having others control you.

You will then be able to communicate to others what your wishes and desires are. This will enable you to attract to you what you need, to go where you want to head.
(Reread that last sentence 2 or 3 times and let it sink in)

It is important to remember the to achieve what you want in life is to know, that "to master communication is to master wealth and to master wealth is to master communication, and that starts with yourself.

I find that this can be a challenge for many people. Some women feel that it isn't right to think about them selves and that they should think about others first. The challenge here and I have discovered this myself, is that you can't truly look after others until you take care of yourself.

Even men can have trouble with this. I hear things like, I don't have time. Yet, there are many ways to fit it in. On a deeper level, many are afraid of looking at what they want or desire. There is a fear of disappointment, not being able to do it or even of succeeding and what that might mean.

There are many ways through the process of discovery and of finding the path to what you desire. The first step is just to begin. Start writing in a journal. Start writing what you want in life and build on it from there. The important thing is to start.

1) With the advance of technology, we are able to reach and communicate
with people on a large spectrum of ways.
For example you can reach people with cell phones, computers,
pagers etc. Along with the new technology, come new challenges
with communication and understanding what the other person is meaning.

When we are listening to another person, we consider their tone and
body language more than the words that they use.

This can be problematic with emails and other forms of communications.
I have seem people get very upset with another person because of what
they believed they were saying and meaning, only to find out later that the meaning of the message was entirely different from what was understood.

To help you understand why this happens consider the following sentence
that was used in a university. The students were told to punctuate it.

Women with out her man is nothing.

Most of the men changed it to;

Women with out her man, is nothing.

Most of the women changed it to;

Women, with out her, man is nothing.

Same sentence, yet two totally different meanings.

So the next time you receive and email that you find upsetting, ask
yourself, have I read this correctly or should I clarify.

Perfection The Un-Live-Able Goal

When we have a thought or idea that we want to do or get across to
other people, we have to communicate to other people. Many people
do not get past this stage of wanting to, for they decide that they
will wait until everything is perfect before they tell anyone or do anything.

I have heard people say that they'll start when they have more
money, time, learn more, practice more, when the kids are older,
etc, etc, etc. The challenge with this is there is no perfect time.
The best time to get started is now.
Yes, you may need to be selective at first with whom you talk to
as there are negative people out there who may try to stop you or
shut you down. Yet, I have found that most people shut themselves
down by their fears and need to have everything just so.

I was talking to this lady who wanted to go on a job interview.
She had spoken to her sister about the interview. Her sister replied,
'make sure you do the interview perfect, because in this city people
know each other and if you blow it, you can kiss your career goodbye'.

WOW, no pressure there. Going into an interview with that in your
mind is a good way to blow it. You will probably be terrified, which
can cause the mistakes you are trying to prevent.

I have heard things like this before, yet most people are not sitting
there just waiting to crush other people who come in. I have found that
most people are kind, generous and helpful. What you need is
encouragement and just to do your best. The world does not end with a bad interview.

Reality is much brighter when you look at the most successful people
out there. They repeatedly said that they failed there way to the top,
that they learned by their mistakes and went on. There are millionaires
that lost everything, brushed themselves off and then created more millions.
They talked to people and connected with them. You can't succeed by being
a hermit.

We are not born with all knowledge on all things. We are not robots,
calculating our every move. We are human beings that learn by what
we do. We discover by how we interact. We learn when we communicate
our thoughts and ideas.

Are there nay sayers out there? Yes, run from them. Find the ones who
are looking forward to hearing from you and wish to encourage you.

I remember this one day I was sitting in the car, waiting for my partner

About Perfection

It is in the trying and being that makes us human. It is the journey not
the end that tells us who we are and what we are made of. Perfection
is not a means, it leaves no room for variation, creativity and
understanding of the process. It is through the trial and error that we
gain knowledge and wisdom.
We remember and learn more through our mistakes than by what we
do perfect. For if everything were perfect, done perfect, there would be
no journey, no life, no adventure, ...only an end.

How to Master Communication even if you failed high school grammar.

Does the thought of knowing your verbs from your adjectives scare you? Can the word syntax send you running for cover? Or perhaps putting two words together in front of a crowd sends your body into complete melt down.
If so, there is help for you.

Have you ever wanted to communicate more effectively with other people, or dreamed of writing a novel.
Maybe you just want to write better reports, get your points across more clearly or be able to stand up in front of people and give a talk.

Often people will say to themselves, “I can’t do that, I was never good at English in school.” Yet, this feeling of not good enough is where many communication masters began.

I know of people who stuttered as children and were told they’d never be able to read or talk, yet are well known speakers today. One other person that I know, immigrated to the US and had to learn English, yet today he is a speaker and author. These people discovered that it takes more that knowing your nouns and sentence structure to communicate with others.

Part of the challenge is, we were taught that if we can write a proper sentence then we can communicate are thoughts correctly. That is like saying if you can see than you can read or if you can hear you can listen. Unfortunately, this is not true for reading and listening are skills that we need to learn.

There are many people who have grammatically correct sentences with proper punctuation who can not write anything creative or interesting. It takes more than grammar to connect with other people.

Getting your thoughts, feelings, views and values across to another person are skills that you can learn and master.

It is important to understand that connecting with people can be very intensive and emotional whether you are feeling fear; anger, joy or ecstasy and many people shy away from this. Most often people misunderstand one another because people see things differently and can get upset when people do not see eye to eye with them.

There is a lot of fear of being wrong, of making mistakes, of failing or being perceived as being stupid in any way. Many misunderstandings lead to disagreements and violence in trying to make or force their way of thinking. People can act as though their lives depended on being right as apposed to having a different point of view.
These fears create many barriers to communication which need to be overcome in order to connect with another person and master communication.

When you can release the need to be right, you can discover a whole new world of possibilities and wonders. Marianne Williamson, stated it well when she said, “Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?” It is important to understand, that to make the world work, we need different views, outlooks, likes and desires.

Many problems happen with people who share the same birth language. There seems to be an assumption that if you speak the same language that the other person should automatically understand you.

What most people do not realize is that on a physiological level, our brains are all wired differently due to the way, environment and culture that we have been raised. This also helps to create our psychological out look and personalities.

There is also our metaphysical nature which affects whether we are willing to try and connect with other people. We are influenced by Universal laws, even when we are not aware of them. For example, if you did not know that gravity existed, it wouldn’t stop you from falling off of a cliff. On a quantum level our beliefs and attitudes affects the outcome of our ability to interact with each other. For example many people have heard of “Cause and Effect”. In this law, as you treat others, so shall you be treated. On a scientific level, we are electromagnetic spectrums of energy. So the energy that we give off, we attract back, because like attracts like. This means, when you give off anger, hatred, judgments or love, kindness, and understanding, you are attracting the very same behaviour back to you. This in turn, affects your ability to communicate and connect with other people.

Your beliefs have an impact on whether you are happy or sad, have abundance or poverty, health or suffering and even of what you can or cannot be, have or do.
It is when we are aware of our own beliefs and values we can work on seeing if they work for us, or if we need to change or alter them.

So maybe you’re asking yourself, where do I begin? That question is easy to answer, with yourself. So often people have no idea what they want and hope that other people will figure it out for them. I have seen people get mad at other people for not knowing what they want or for misunderstanding them.

It is important to realize that we can’t communicate to others before we clearly know what we want and where we are heading. The people that I spoke about earlier; their lives improved when they clearly understood what they wanted, and then were able to ask others for guidance and moved forward in helping others. For communicating is connecting with others.

The second area, once you understand yourself, is that it’s important to understand others and their reality. The next step would be to realize that what you think you are seeing and understanding may not be an exact representation of reality. Our brains filter out most information around us so as not to overload us. What it chooses to let through are things that are important to us and things that are a potential danger. Any information that is considered in conflict with our perceived reality and beliefs is filtered away. So you need to be open to learning and discovery.
Now, if you take this information, consider the following. What if you realized that reality is often illusive and personal? What if you where to discover that the main block to your growth and answers are in the way the you perceive yourself, the world around you and of what you believe you can achieve? And what if you were to understand that the answers weren’t out there, but inward and that you already have what you need to communicate clearly to others? What if I told you, that what you had to do was to be willing to look anew, and that it can build from there?
See if you can’t realize the possibilities from understanding yourself and others around you in order to master communication.
Today, we are asking more questions and wanting more answers. Today more than ever people are asking, what if I can?

Our Bain RAS System

To be able to communicate, we need to connect with other people. The challenge is that there are so many things that can get in the way of your message reaching the other person as intended.

One of the areas is the filtering system in our brains. Everything that comes to us through our senses, example sight, hearing etc, goes through the R.A.S (Reticular Activating System).

The R.A.S basically opens up and says; is this important or a potential danger to me. If the answer is no to each question, it closes down and filters away the information. So a majority of what is around us is ignored by or brain.

This means that both you and the other party that you are trying to communicate with are missing what could be vital information that is being sent back and forth. We then make judgments and assumptions based on this partial information.

When you learn how to notice more and make more informed decision, it increases credibility, understanding, profit and give you and edge in business and life.

One way to start to notice more is to be in the now, to pay close attention to what the other person is saying without distractions. This tells your R.A.S that what the other person is saying is important, and then more of the information gets through for you to make a decision on.

Another way is to develop your listening skills so that you can know how to listen on several levels. Most people do not listen fully to the person they are talking to. Many are also thinking of what they want to say next, or of what they need to do later and then try to fill in the blanks of what the other person said.

See if you can’t realize the benefits and profitability of learning receiving more of the message being sent.

In the mean time start to notice what your level of attention has been so that you have a starting point to grow and measure from.

Hi,
It has been a while since I last wrote in. I have been busy changing many things and creating others.
I was reading a story that Jim Edwards sent me. He and his wife were in Australia and sent an update. Part of what he said was so true when it come to interacting with other people that I wanted to share it with you...

In the end, all you have is not the money you make, but the impact you have on other people's lives and the friendships you create.

** The Scenery Might Change, But People Are the Same **
People are the same everywhere when it comes to human behavior and how they want to be treated. I'm at a seminar where people paid thousands of dollars to attend... But even if they only spent $29, they all WANT the same things:
- They want you to tell them the straight story with no bullshit.
- When you talk to them, they want you to be yourself... your genuine self... With no airs,
pretending, or trying to be something you're not.
- Manners still count... "please" and "thank you" can literally carry you around the world.
- STOP and THINK before you talk (especially if you're tired) and always be careful of other
people's feelings.
- Understand that when you sell somebody something on the Internet, they are a real person...
not "just" another sale. They have hopes, dreams, concerns, desires, and things that are
important to them. You can NEVER, under any circumstances, betray that trust.
- Integrity is everything... and once that trust is gone, you can never get it back.

(Maria here) These values and ways to treat others are an integrile part of developing skills for communication mastery.
