What Are Your Intentions

When engaged in communication with another person, we must be aware of our intentions, with the message that we want to get across.

Do we want to inform, coercion, manipulate, inspire, persuade, or control?

It is important to know and realize what we are trying to do to be affective. Sometimes people are not aware of what there intentions are. They believe that they are trying to persuade, when in fact what they are doing is manipulating and forcing control over the other person. When we do that, we all lose out in the end. People will be cautious about interacting with you in the future, which leads to communication breakdown.

    Ask yourself the following

  • Do you ever stop to think about what your intensions are before speaking?
  • What do you believe that your predominate style is and why?
  • Have you ever felt that someone was trying to coerce or manipulate you into agreeing? And how did that make you feel?
